Birding in India - Crested Serpent Eagle

Crested Serpent Eagle is a widespread resident raptor in Peninsular India. Its primary diet consists mainly of tree snakes and lizards. We have always seen it perched motionless, its sharp eyes scanning the forest ground and trees for prey.

Here's a compilation of images of the Serpent Eagle taken from our various visits to the wildlife sanctuaries in Southern India.

This CSE (Crested Serpent Eagle) was sidelight in golden morning light.

This one was well camouflaged against the backdrop of the dried tree trunk.

This one was busy calling out for for a partner which unfortunately didn't turn up.

This juvenile was a beauty to watch, however it refused to sit on a open perch though we followed it from perch to perch for 15 mins.

This CSE was photographed on a dead tree trunk on a wet monsoon evening.

This again was photographed after a heavy downpour and it allowed us to get very for this almost full frame shot.

Exquisite predatory birds! Thomas, I adore Your pictures. I photograph people and city rather, but Your works are so beautiful that I have the readiness to begin experiment with photographing animals alone...I think however that very difficult "models" are this and I do not know, if senile I patience...:))
Cheers!

Your pictures of the Crested Serpent Eagle are simply fabulous! Did you use the 300 mm lens to get these sharp and detailed photographs? Can't you very briefly describe for all of us, e.g. in your next post, how you photograph birds?

Fantastic eagle shots. My favourite is the top one, where the backgroung follows the shape of the beak. Also the eagle has a a fantastic 'expression' in his eye.

Your Crested Serpent Eagle Photos are excellent. I like the top photo as the Eagle seems to be pondering over something in the Moment. You Capture Behavior and the Feelings that the birds are expressing perfectly.

Thank you also for your comments on my photoblog. It means alot coming from an excellent wildlife photographer such as your self. I'll be back to visit your photoblog often.

Beautifully crisp photos.
Are those cobwebs on the CSE's head(last photo)? Ha! So even mighty eagles are prone to a little "I've got cobwebs in my head" ... though his eyes look alert enough.

I am watching the news, seeing the chaos in Mumbai, which isn't all that far from Karnataka, is it? My prayer is that the violence will be over quickly, and that it does not spread. Be safe.
