Birding in India - National Bird of India

The male Indian Peafowl or commonly known as the Peacock is the National bird of India. We wanted to dedicate a post to this beautiful bird after the series on the Tiger, which is the National animal of India.

The biggest challenge we faced while trying to photograph this approachable species was to get the whole bird in the composition with acceptable levels of details.

Here's a series of recent images of the handsome National bird of India.
All images are of wild peafowls found in and around the wildlife sanctuaries of Bandipur and Mudumalai and were photographed using the Nikon D300, Nikon 300mm f2.8 lens. The images have been post processed using Gimp. While processing, I have focussed on cropping for composition, levels, saturation and sharpening . Neatimage was used to reduce noise levels.

This image is almost full frame at ISO 200, f5.6, 1/100s at 600mm focal length.

This image again is almost full frame at ISO 200, f5.6, 1/160s at 600mm focal length.

This image was taken at ISO 200, f2.8, 1/400s, 300mm focal length and is cropped for a closeup composition.

This image is again full frame slightly cropped for composition and taken at ISO 200, f2.8, 1/200s at 300mm focal length.

This image specs are f2.8, 1.400s, ISO 200, 300mm focal length

This is an extreme closeup shot at f2.8, 1/2000s, ISO 800, 300mm focal length.

This image was taken at ISO 200, f2.8, 1/400s at 300mm focal length

I have been photographing peafowls for over two years with a video camera for my film "Sarang- The Peacock". But the sight of a peacock still makes me want to reach out for the camera. Such is the mesmerism created by this bird. And you have captured it!

These have to be one of the most beautiful birds around Thomas. I saw a picture of a white one a while back and could not believe it was a peacock too.

We used to have over a dozen peacocks on the property that we were renting a few years back in Winthrop, WA. Their chicks were cute to follow. In the morning the peacocks would land on our roof and wake us up like alarm clocks and their calls would penetrate the forest for miles.

I have tried to photographs peacocks by myself and found it a difficult object to fit into a regular frame. You solved this problem exceptionally well! And thanks for the technical details, which I find very helpful.

Peacocks have the most beautiful plummage, and you have caught the angles of light perfectly.

I love those extra feathers above the peacock's head. I never knew that existed. I see why it's the national bird. Beautiful.

The trouble with shooting large birds is that they don't fit into a single frame when close. Its great that you managed to capture it - nad how! Cheers.

Thomas, excellent captures of this beautiful bird! I really enjoyed the portrait shot. We had peafowl for years on our property and I never really noticed how cool their faces are. When looking at the peacock, you seem to get caught up in seeing all the beautiful plumage and I guess I never took notice of the face.
