The male Indian Peafowl or commonly known as the Peacock is the National bird of India. We wanted to dedicate a post to this beautiful bird after the series on the Tiger, which is the National animal of India.
The biggest challenge we faced while trying to photograph this approachable species was to get the whole bird in the composition with acceptable levels of details.
Here's a series of recent images of the handsome National bird of India. All images are of wild peafowls found in and around the wildlife sanctuaries of Bandipur and Mudumalai and were photographed using the Nikon D300, Nikon 300mm f2.8 lens. The images have been post processed using Gimp. While processing, I have focussed on cropping for composition, levels, saturation and sharpening . Neatimage was used to reduce noise levels.

Hi Thomas,
A long time I did not visit your blog due to holidays and job travelling... You offer us a wonderful report on peacock... I have never seen so wonderful pictures of it... You have the eye man!!!
I love the unusual angles and the close-ups. Great photos, as usual. Thanks for sharing the photo details - helps those of us who are trying to learn!
Thomas,
What a spectacular array of colors and patterns on this gorgeous bird! Your photos are captivating and I love the up close picture of its head..this might be an inspiration for a quilt...hmmmm ;-)
Beautiful, Thomas! That metallic shimmer really sets them apart and you've captured it so well.
Exquisite!
I wish we had some wandering around here... it would make wildlife enthusiasts out of the most hardened souls!
I have been photographing peafowls for over two years with a video camera for my film "Sarang- The Peacock". But the sight of a peacock still makes me want to reach out for the camera. Such is the mesmerism created by this bird. And you have captured it!
great photos
Hope I can work on my photographic skills to imporove it
you can see some of my bandipur mudumalai wildlife / bird pictures at http://www.wildlifesanctuaryindia.com/wildlife/

These have to be one of the most beautiful birds around Thomas. I saw a picture of a white one a while back and could not believe it was a peacock too.
What a graceful animal it is.
Great images with lots of details!
what a mejestic and pride bird
Peacock National majestic bird of India !
again congratulations and thank you for sharing.
François.
We used to have over a dozen peacocks on the property that we were renting a few years back in Winthrop, WA. Their chicks were cute to follow. In the morning the peacocks would land on our roof and wake us up like alarm clocks and their calls would penetrate the forest for miles.
Proud and majestic Indian peacock !
good day for you T and S.
soo beautiful and proud. the colors are awsome.
Bonsoir,
Beautiful serie..Bravo!..Happy New Year!
You certainly did that bird justice with those superb photos!
Been anxiously awaiting your new shots. Peacocks are incredibly beautiful and you did a good job capturing it. Blue Skies.
gorgeous shots! That is one beautiful bird, and your photos are amazing. :)
Wonderful images again, such spretacular colors and compositions. Lovely.
Beautiful shots of this peacock. I like how you've filled the frame with this huge bird.
I have tried to photographs peacocks by myself and found it a difficult object to fit into a regular frame. You solved this problem exceptionally well! And thanks for the technical details, which I find very helpful.
I've seen lots of peacock pictures but your really captured so much detail. I like all of the images but #3 & #4 are just so super nice!!!
Peacocks have the most beautiful plummage, and you have caught the angles of light perfectly.
I love those extra feathers above the peacock's head. I never knew that existed. I see why it's the national bird. Beautiful.
The trouble with shooting large birds is that they don't fit into a single frame when close. Its great that you managed to capture it - nad how! Cheers.
Thomas, excellent captures of this beautiful bird! I really enjoyed the portrait shot. We had peafowl for years on our property and I never really noticed how cool their faces are. When looking at the peacock, you seem to get caught up in seeing all the beautiful plumage and I guess I never took notice of the face.
La troisième photo est vraiment originale !
Thomas: I do so love your photograhic ability and what great shots of a really neat Peacock. You made some spectacular captures of the colorful bird.
Thanks for your nice comments.
I would have loved to observe this spectacular bird! I loved every one of your shots - couldn't pick a favorite!!!
A true beauty - and so perfectly captured, with all the different shades of green and blue.
This time we have struggled to pick a favorite - they are just so perfectly in harmony with eachother.
Great work!
The peacock and the photographs are AMAZING.

In a word...STUNNING!!! The peacock is one of my favorite birds. My mother adored them when I was a child, our home always had a few peacock decor items. Oh, what she would've given to have these captures hanging in her home! I can't pick a fave, they are all stunning in their own right!
Ilest superbe avec ces mille yeux. la 3 a un cadrage et une pose très graphique
